Museum Day -- tour the Striking Iron exhibit

  • National Smithsonian of African Art 950 Independence Avenue Southwest Washington, DC, 20560 United States (map)

The African Art Museum recently installed an exhibit called: Striking Iron, the Art of African Blacksmiths. It is a display that captures both the strength and artistic qualities of iron, as well at the critical role iron played in Africa's history.

The Los Angeles Times said the exhibit displays the "delicate artistry of clever metalworkers" while a review on NPR said it captured "Africa's rich history of ironworking through 225 tools, weapons and adornments from over 100 ethnic groups across Africa". (See links to both articles below.) Come enjoy and discuss the pieces on display with fellow YPIA members!
