Sick Trades: The Side-Effects of EU Trade Agreements with Latin America

  • Cleveland Park Library 3310 Connecticut Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20008 United States (map)

EU law requires all relevant EU policies, including trade policy, to promote sustainable development. As such, EU trade policy aims to ensure that economic development goes hand in hand with principles of social justice, respect for human rights, high labor standards, and high environmental standards.

However, in 2011 alone, the EU imported beef and livestock feed associated with Brazilian deforestation equivalent to more than 300 football fields per day; according to official data, about 3,050 sq miles of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed between August 2017 and July 2018. Also at issue are the rights of indigenous populations, threats to health security, and sub-par labor standards and safety protections for Latin American workers.
