Jailbird Julian: The Arrest of Assange

  • WeWork 1440 G Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20005 United States (map)

Join YPIA's Europe-Eurasia & Americas Programs in a discussion about the April 11th arrest of Wikileaks' Julian Assange and its widespread implications for the future of journalism and its role in international diplomacy. This is an off the record event for professionals in a variety of fields to learn about and debate/discuss different perspectives on international issues.

After spending nearly seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, was arrested by British police, convicted for violating the terms of his bail in the U.K., and had an indictment against him unsealed in the United States—all in a single day.

Despite the swiftness of this recent action, the charges against Assange raise a host of complex questions that implicate international diplomatic relations conventions, free speech protections, the possible criminalization of newsgathering & journalistic activities, and the future of the ways in which information is disseminated.
